Types of Protection Dogs

A Guard Dog or Watch Dog is a dog employed to guard against, and watch for, unwanted or unexpected humans or animals in a designated area. Both Guard Dogs and Watch Dogs bark to alert their owners of an intruder’s presence and to scare away the intruder. The Watch Dog's function stops here but a Guard Dog is capable of attacking or restraining the intruder. Most working breeds are large enough and strong enough to attack or drive off an intruder. These dogs, if trained properly, are great around the family only. They are unstable outside their designated area of guard or watch and have to be put up if you have visitors.

An Attack Dog is a dog used for the purpose of attacking any human or animal on sight without hesitation or without discrimination. Instead of bringing attention to an intruder, the Attack Dog is trained to chase, injure or possibly kill the intruder. Attack Dogs are employed in high security or hostile areas. These dogs are used by the military and law enforcement. These are not typical dogs and are kept away from the public. It takes a very experienced handler to control these dogs. They are also very unstable around anyone but the handler.

A Personal Protection Dog, on the other hand, is used for the purpose of protecting its master and the family in which it lives. Unlike the other three types of protection dogs mentioned above, these dogs have excellent obedience and behavior. Protection Dogs are always with you as a true member of your family. If trained properly, they are extremely stable, confident and intelligent. They are great around the family and know that kids are never a threat. Protection dogs are trained when to bite and when not too. When necessary, they will protect you with their lives. These dogs can handle any level of stress in any given situation. Personal Protection Training is not a sport or game to the dog. In the real world, someone wanting to inflict serious harm, or even death, to you or your family will never be coming after you with one big bulky arm but they WILL be fighting your dog.

There are so many misconceptions about protection dogs, mainly because protection dogs nowdays are humanized and are just a member of your family. The dog industry is mostly to blame for the misconceptions about protection dogs, since some of them are more into it for the money than for the dog. As a result, most people are uninformed. Team Red K-9 is here to remedy that.
